In the Merry Month of May

By Doris A. Stone

Doris A. Stone, “In the Merry Month of May,” Friend, May 1983, 23

MAY is the FIFTH month of the YEAR, and it has THIRTY-ONE days. It was named for MAIA, the goddess of SPRING in Roman mythology.

The first day of this month is called MAY DAY. On this day children in some parts of the world DANCE around a MAYPOLE that is decorated with FLOWERS. In the Soviet Union and some other countries, May first is known as LABOR Day, a day when working people are honored.

One flower commonly associated with May is the LILY OF THE VALLEY. And the birthstone for this MONTH is the EMERALD.

The first permanent ENGLISH settlement established in America was JAMESTOWN in what is now the state of VIRGINIA. This settlement was established on May 14, 1607. On May 9, 1926, Admiral RICHARD BYRD made the first flight to the NORTH POLE. On May 5, 1961, ALAN SHEPARD became the first AMERICAN and SECOND person to travel in SPACE.

MEMORIAL Day is a May HOLIDAY; and, of course, on the second SUNDAY in the MERRY month of May, MOTHER’S DAY is celebrated.

All of the capitalized words in the story are hidden in this puzzle. Look for them by reading forward, backward, up, and down.

Nine Bible sayings are hidden in this square. To find one of them, choose a number from one to nine. Starting at the left of row A, write the letters under that number in order by rows. Next, separate the letters into words, and the saying will appear. Then choose a different number and start again.
